User Guide: Make Cheap Calls to France

By

If you are relocating to France, have a second residence there, or often travel to France for work, you might need to know how to call France for any reason.

Thanks to modern communications technologies, you have endless options to make effortless and affordable international calls.

There are a few steps you must take in order to properly make a call to France, regardless of whether you are using a landline, a mobile phone, a prepaid calling card, or the internet. Let’s explore!

How to Call France from the UK

1. Calling a Landline Number in France

If you are calling a landline in France from the UK, start by dialing “00” – the exit code for the UK. Without entering the exit code first, you can never call overseas. After entering the exit code, dial France’s country code, “33.” Make sure to enter the correct country code, or your call will not connect.

After the country code, dial the area code. The area codes in France are divided into five regions. For the Paris region, the area code is 01. For Northwest Frace “02”, For Northeast Frace “03”, For Southwest France “04”, and for Southwest France, the area code is “05.”

Refer to this table if you don’t know in which region your desired city is located.

Zone (Region or City) Area Code
Paris / Île de France 01
Northwest France (Brest, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Nantes, Orleans, Rouen), the Réunion and Mayotte DOMs 02
Northeast France (Boulogne, Calais, Dijon, Lille, Nancy, Strasbourg, Reims, Troyes) 03
Southeast France (Cannes, Grenoble, Lyon, Marseille, Monaco, Nice, St. Etienne, Toulon, Valence) and Corsica 04
Southeast France (Bordeaux, Limoges, Lourdes, Toulouse) and the codes for Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, French Guiana, and Saint Pierre et Miquelon DOMs 05

After entering the area code, dial the number you want to call. Phone numbers in France consist of eight digits, excluding the area code. Do not include the first zero of the area code if you’re calling a number in France from abroad.

If you’ve followed the procedure correctly, your number should look something like “00 331 11 22 33 44.”

2. If Calling a Mobile Number

If you are calling a mobile number in France from the UK, enter the “+” symbol before dialing the number. After the + sign, dial “33” – the country for France.

The area code for France’s mobile numbers is either “06” or “07.”  No matter in which region the mobile number is being used, the area code will be no other than the ones mentioned before.

At this point, the mobile number you want to call should look something like “+337 11 22 33 44.”
