Wrong Number Showing on Text Messages? Here’s What You Need to Do?

By

Has it ever happened to you that you’ve messaged someone and your number is showing as the wrong number on text messages? If yes, it is not a common issue but can happen to anyone who’s recently ported their number.

If you see the wrong number showing on text messages, it means that after a number is ported to another mobile network, it has not been synchronized with Google messaging or is not updated in the case of iMessages.

Let’s explore the issue and get into the details-

Wrong Number Showing on Text Messages – Top Reasons

Seeing your number as a wrong number on the text messages sent by your phone may shock you in the first instance but if you think about the various reasons, it could have happened, everything may seem legit!

There are two main reasons for this issue-

1- Ported your Number Recently

If you’ve recently switched your number, this issue may arise as your mobile network provider has not updated or synchronized your number. Hence, you have to do it manually to get this error fixed. It is easy to synchronize your text messaging on iPhone and Android phones.

2- Sending Messages with RCS Instead of SMS (Android)

There could be a possibility that if you are sending messages through RCS (Rich Communication Services) using Wi-Fi or mobile data, your messages will show the wrong number. If porting is not an issue and you are still seeing the wrong number, this could be the reason!

If the error persists, you can contact your mobile network provider. But before that, try these different fixes and remove this issue.

How To Fix the Issue of Wrong Number Showing on Text Messages?

Although the issue may seem to be complicated at first, once you’ve understood the reason for the same, it is easy to fix it. Whether you are using an iOS or an Android phone, the steps to fix this error are simple. So, let’s get started.

1. Check Number Display During Calls

First, verify whether the correct number appears when making calls. If your number is correct during calls but not in text messages, the issue likely lies with your messaging settings rather than a problem with your number itself.

2. Verify Messaging App Settings

The messaging app you use can affect how your number is displayed. If you’re using Google Messages, Samsung Messages, or another app, the issue might be specific to that app. Try switching between different messaging apps to see if the problem persists.

3. Clear Messaging App Data

Clearing the data for your messaging app can help resolve number display issues. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to Settings on your phone.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose your messaging app (e.g., Google Messages).
  4. Tap on Storage and then select Clear Data.

Note: Clearing app data will delete your message history, so make sure to back up any important messages before proceeding.

4. Reconfigure RCS Settings

Rich Communication Services (RCS) settings might need to be reconfigured. Follow these steps:

  1. Open your messaging app and go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to Chat Features.
  3. Verify your phone number. This may take some time to complete, so be patient.

Reconfiguring RCS settings can help synchronize your number correctly with the messaging app.

5. Request a New SIM Card

If the problem persists, consider requesting a new SIM card from your mobile provider. Sometimes, an outdated or faulty SIM card can cause issues with number display. A new SIM card may resolve these problems.

6. Contact Your Mobile Provider

If none of the above solutions work, the issue may be related to your mobile provider’s system. Contact their customer support for assistance, as they can provide support specific to their network and help you resolve any lingering issues with your number display.

7. Steps to Fix it on an iPhone or iOS

The main issue in an iPhone arises in iMessages. Generally, iMessage has to be updated manually if you are seeing the wrong number on text messages. To fix it, follow these steps-

  • Go to the ‘Settings/ and choose ‘Messages’ and turn off ‘iMessage’.
  • Restart your phone. You can do that by pressing and holding the on/off button.
  • Go to the ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Phone’. Go to ‘My Number’ and check if it is correct!
  • In case it is not correct, enter the correct phone number.
  • Now, turn on iMessage. You can do it by selecting ‘Settings’ and ‘Message’.
  • Go to the option of ‘Send and Receive’ and check if the right number is being displayed.

If the number is right, you can start sending iMessages.

8. Steps to Fix it on an Android

If you have the issue of the wrong number showing on text messages on an Android phone, here’s what you have to do-

  • Go to the ‘Settings’.
  • Tap on ‘Messages’.
  • Choose ‘More options’ and go to the ‘Settings’.
  • Select ‘Chat Features’.
  • Turn off the ‘Chat Enable’ feature.
  • Wait for 15 minutes.
  • Restart your phone.
  • Turn on ‘Chat Features’ and get started!

Conclusion

When you are switching networks and numbers, you might face some unexpected issues that may result in wrong numbers showing on text messages. While this issue is quite common among people porting their numbers, the actual reason may not be known!

The main reason for this error is that the mobile network provider has not updated or synchronized the number, which results in this error. Apart from this, if you are sending messages through RCS rather than SMS, you might face this issue. However, these can be dealt with irrespective of iPhone or Android phone.

Go to the ‘Settings’ and explore the ‘Message’ option on an iPhone and ‘Chat Features’ on an Android phone to fix this issue. If the problem persists, you can always contact your mobile network provider to get detailed information about the problem and ways to rectify it!
